Southern Echo, Inc.

present the

 

Dismantling the

Achievement Gap Conference:

 

A Gathering of the Stakeholders to

Assess Where We Have Been,

Where We Are, and to

Determine Where We Need To Go

 

This conference will use presentations & small group

workshops to lift up the following issues:

 

  • Data to document the widespread student achievement gap in Mississippi Delta school districts

 

  • How the policies of the MS Dept. of Education are aimed at dismantling the structures that sustain the achievement gap

 

  • The importance of effective leadership by all the stakeholders within the school system as a key to the process needed to dismantle the gap

 

  • What stake holders need to dismantle the gap and what they need to be able to work together to make this fight effective

 

  • What "Justice Funding" is and why it is needed to dismantle the gap

 

  • How Mississippi built the underlying structures and culture that sustains the achievement gap

 

  • Why school boards, superintendents, administrators, and teachers must co-partner with parents and students to transform the culture that supports the achievement gap

 

  • What is needed to create a school climate that can support the work to dismantle the gap

 

  • Dismantling the gap from a legislative perspective

 

  • How the stake holders can work together to obtain the funding needed to dismantle the achievement gap

  • How racial segregation in higher education has helped to maintain the achievement gap

 

  • The role of historically black universities in making the fight to dismantle the achievement gap

 

  • The critical role of teacher quality and a rigorous curriculum in dismantling the gap

 

  • Understanding school budgets and finance as public policy
